Hyundai Motor Invests $15.5 Billion in India Through 2032
Hyundai Motor Group announced a $15.5 billion investment in India through 2032. The seven-year plan covers production expansion, R&D infrastructure, local supplier support and future technologies. Hyundai and Kia together operate three plants with a combined annual capacity of 1.4 million vehicles and sold 852,164 cars in India last year, holding 18.7% market share.
Hyundai Motor Group announced a $15.5 billion investment in India through 2032, reaffirming the market's importance to its global growth strategy. The announcement came during a meeting between Group CEO Chung Eui-sun and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
What Hyundai's India Investment Covers
The figure is massive. The investment will be deployed over seven years starting this year, according to a Group statement. It will target production capacity expansion, research and development infrastructure, support for local suppliers to increase parts localization. Advancement of future technologies.
The Group plans to establish a dedicated investment entity in India to execute the plan. India's population of 1.47 billion makes it the world's third-largest auto market after China and the United States. Automakers looking to compete there need local production facilities.
Why India Matters to Hyundai
Import tariffs in India can reach between 70% and 110%. That number alone explains the push toward local manufacturing. Chung Eui-sun said: "India is a key strategic market for Hyundai Motor Group's future growth, its expansion in emerging markets. Its next-generation automotive innovations."
Hyundai operates two plants in India — one in Chennai and another in Pune — while subsidiary Kia runs a facility in Anantapur. Combined annual production capacity stands at 1.4 million vehicles, with expectations of further increases as investments grow.
Last year, the two companies sold 852,164 vehicles in India, capturing 18.7% of the passenger car market. That volume places them second behind Maruti Suzuki India. The numbers confirm the expansion isn't just ambition — it's a response to an already competitive position.
