General Motors Sales Drop 4.2% in US Market During Q2
General Motors announced a 4.2% year-over-year decline in its US market sales during the second quarter of this year, totaling 714,896 vehicles. The drop reflects several key factors, including a contraction in the electric vehicle market, the discontinuation of certain older models, and inventory bottlenecks that affected the company's quarterly performance.
Brand Performance Highlights
The Chevrolet division recorded its highest-ever sales of sport utility vehicles SUV during Q2, led by the Chevrolet Trailblazer with a 28% sales increase and the Traverse which rose by 20%. The Corvette sports car also posted a 24% sales gain during the same period.
Buick and Cadillac Post Notable Results
For the Buick brand under the GM umbrella, the Envista achieved its best-ever quarterly sales, while the Enclave recorded its highest quarterly sales since 2021. In the Cadillac segment, the company posted its best-ever electric vehicle sales in Q2, supported by strong demand for the Optiq and Vistiq models.
Truck and EV Segment Successes
General Motors reported that the Sierra pickup achieved its highest Q2 sales ever, while the Canyon recorded its best first-half sales performance. The company also noted that the V-family of vehicles posted both its highest quarterly and first-half sales, demonstrating continued strong demand for certain models despite broader market challenges.
This sales decline comes amid wider shifts in the US automotive market, where manufacturers face increasing pressure to balance traditional vehicle production with electric vehicle expansion, while navigating demand fluctuations and supply chain constraints.
