General Motors to Launch Two New Locally Manufactured Models in Egypt, Including a Chevrolet Crossover
General Motors Egypt has announced its intention to introduce two new locally manufactured models in the Egyptian market, including a compact crossover from the Chevrolet brand. This strategic move aims to expand the company's product portfolio while supporting Egypt's national agenda for localizing the automotive industry and boosting local component integration.
Awards and Recognition at Major Ceremony
The announcement was made during General Motors' participation in the 16th edition of the Car of the Year in Egypt awards, where the company and its Chevrolet brand secured multiple accolades in both passenger car and commercial truck categories. The event coincided with GM's celebration of 100 years of operations in Egypt and the Middle East, adding a festive atmosphere to the proceedings.
Chevrolet won three major awards, most notably being crowned the best-selling automotive brand in the Egyptian market across both passenger cars and commercial trucks combined, in addition to leading the commercial truck sales segment individually. The Chevrolet Optra also secured the award for Best Economical Locally Manufactured Passenger Car for the second consecutive year, reinforcing its strong market presence and its vital role in supporting local manufacturing.
New Compact Crossover with Local Manufacturing
Sharon Nishi, Chairman and Managing Director of General Motors Egypt and Africa, revealed during the ceremony that the company is preparing to launch the two new locally built models. She explained that one of them will be a new compact Chevrolet crossover designed to meet the needs of a broad segment of Egyptian customers seeking a practical and modern vehicle with advanced technologies.
Nishi emphasized that the launch of these two models reflects GM's unwavering commitment to continuing investment in local manufacturing, expanding its product portfolio, and strengthening its contribution to the national industry while creating long-term value for the Egyptian market. She added that the awards received by the company reflect the tremendous trust Egyptian customers place in the Chevrolet brand — trust built over a full century of presence and active contribution to the automotive sector in Egypt and the Middle East.
A Century of Local Manufacturing Heritage
General Motors established its presence in Egypt in 1926 when it set up its headquarters in Alexandria, then began manufacturing Chevrolet trucks locally in 1937, making it one of the earliest companies to contribute to the foundation of the Egyptian automotive industry. The company's factory in the 6th of October City has surpassed a cumulative production volume of one million vehicles, highlighting its enormous production capacity and its vital role in meeting the demands of the local market.
General Motors Egypt received a special honor on the occasion of the centennial of its operations in Egypt and the Middle East, in recognition of its ongoing contributions to the development of the local automotive industry. Sharon Nishi was also personally honored for her leadership role in managing the company's operations and enhancing its competitive presence in the Egyptian and African automotive sectors.
