General Egypt, the official distributor of SWM (Shineray) commercial vehicles and vans in the local market, has announced plans to establish a new vehicle assembly and manufacturing plant with a total investment of EGP 2 billion. The facility is expected to become operational by 2028, marking another significant step in the country's push toward local automotive production.

Project Details and Production Capacity

The new plant will be built on a 25,000-square-meter plot in its first phase, with plans to expand by an additional 45,000 square meters in subsequent stages, bringing the total area to 70,000 square meters upon full completion. Initial production capacity is set at 5,000 vehicles annually, with a target to increase output to 20,000 vehicles per year by 2030.

Sales Targets and Market Expansion

Nashaat Abu Hata, Chairman of General Egypt, stated that the company's focus will be on affordable and electric vehicles in the coming period. The firm aims to boost its annual sales to 4,000 units by 2027 and reach 5,000 units by 2028, coinciding with the launch of the local assembly project. Construction of the new factory is scheduled to begin in the last quarter of this year, complementing the company's existing manufacturing operations at another facility.

Upcoming Models and Electric Vehicle Strategy

Through this project, General Egypt plans to produce MPVs and SUVs alongside the current Shineray X30 model. The company will also test the market by introducing electric vehicles to gauge consumer response, with full-scale production of these models expected to start in 2028. Currently, General Egypt offers double-cab pickup trucks, cargo vans, and 6-seater minivans, but it will later expand into passenger cars and motorcycles manufactured locally.
