Egyptian Ministers Inspect GM Egypt Factory as US Safety Standards Are Adopted
Engineer Khaled Hashim, Minister of Industry and Internal Trade, and Dr. Mohamed Farid, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, inspected the production lines at General Motors Egypt's factory in the 6th of October City on Wednesday. The visit coincided with a press conference held at the plant, where the Egyptian government announced the adoption of the U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), a move aimed at facilitating the import of American vehicles and spare parts into the Egyptian market.
Adoption of U.S. Vehicle Safety Standards in Egypt
Engineer Khaled Hashim stated that adopting the U.S. vehicle safety standards reflects the state's direction to attract more investments across various industrial sectors. He highlighted that Egypt benefits from its strategic geographical location, access to one of the largest consumer markets in the Middle East and Africa, a network of trade agreements, and the availability of skilled labor, all of which strengthen Egypt's position as a regional manufacturing hub.
GM in Egypt for Over 40 Years
Hashim added that General Motors' presence in Egypt for more than 40 years embodies the strength of economic relations between Egypt and the United States. He noted that the company's factory in Egypt is its only facility in Africa and the Middle East, praising GM's continuous success and its production of over one million vehicles locally.
Dr. Mohamed Farid emphasized that the recognition of the U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) is part of the state's reform program to improve the investment climate and facilitate the entry of products into the Egyptian market. He added, during the press conference hosted at the factory, that this step enhances economic cooperation between Egypt and the U.S. and supports industrial expansion plans.
