Egypt Opens Automotive Door to Spanish Manufacturers as Industrial Push Accelerates

Egypt is rolling out the welcome mat for Spanish car manufacturers. Industry Minister Khaled Hashem met with Spain's Ambassador to Cairo, Sergio Román Carranza Forster, to discuss drawing new Spanish companies into the Egyptian market and transferring advanced technology to local production lines. The automotive sector sits at the top of the agenda this time, alongside renewable energy, textiles, and ready-made garments. New cars and local manufacturing are no longer separate conversations in Cairo.

Why Automotive Tops the Priority List

The ministry's updated industrial strategy identifies four sectors for Spanish engagement: cars, spinning and weaving, ready-made garments, and renewable energy. Hashem framed these as areas where Egypt needs both capital and know-how, arguing that Spanish technology injected into local production lines can raise efficiency and create skilled jobs. Egypt's positioning as an export base for the region was also on the table during the talks.

Deep Manufacturing, Not Just Assembly

Assembly alone won't cut it. The discussion went beyond inviting Spanish brands to bolt together imported kits — the goal is building a real manufacturing ecosystem that supports local component suppliers and reduces import dependency. The ambassador's team outlined initiatives to encourage Spanish firms already operating in Egypt to expand. Both sides reviewed success stories from existing Spanish industrial operations in the country. The minister stressed that any obstacles facing Spanish investors — from licensing to supply chains — would be addressed.

Local Supplier Integration

How quickly Spanish manufacturers integrate with Egyptian component suppliers will determine how fast they scale. This is the same challenge every new entrant faces. Prices of locally sourced parts and the depth of the supply chain will decide whether Spanish-built models can compete on cost.

What It Means for Egyptian Car Buyers

More competition. Spanish automakers entering the local manufacturing scene could widen the range of models available and, over the medium term, influence pricing — particularly in the economy and mid-range segments where demand is highest. Egypt's car market has long needed more variety in those brackets, and fresh manufacturing investment is one route to get there.

Exchange visits between officials from both countries are ongoing. The ministry has placed Spanish investment attraction firmly inside its industrial plan. Execution will decide the outcome.
