Egypt's Investment Minister Discusses $20 Million Chinese Factory for Automotive Production Lines
Mohamed Farid Saleh, Egypt's Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, held a meeting with leaders of the Chinese company Jiangsu Changhong, a global firm specializing in designing, manufacturing, and maintaining automotive and railway production lines. The talks focused on establishing a new project to manufacture equipment and production lines for the automotive industry in the Egyptian market, as part of the ministry's strategy to attract foreign direct investment, deepen local manufacturing, and boost exports with an emphasis on high-value industrial projects.
Initial Investment of $20 Million
Both sides reviewed the proposed project, which the company plans to implement with an initial investment of approximately $20 million, with further expansion in subsequent phases. The project aims to localize the manufacturing of production line equipment, strengthen supply chains, increase the local content ratio, and support the state's targets for enhancing the competitiveness of the national industry. This investment represents a significant step toward transferring modern technology to Egypt's automotive sector.
Automotive Industry as a National Priority
The minister emphasized that the state places great importance on attracting investments based on advanced technologies, particularly in the automotive industry and its feeder industries, as they are priority sectors in the economic development strategy. He noted that Egypt possesses competitive advantages that qualify it to attract more qualitative investments, thanks to its advanced infrastructure, distinguished geographical location, wide network of free trade agreements, and investment incentives offered by the state, which enhance the access of Egyptian products to regional and global markets.
He added that the ministry, in coordination with all relevant authorities, is studying providing all necessary support and facilities for establishing the project as soon as possible, including allocating land and utilities, as well as exploring the best cooperation mechanisms with the Sovereign Fund of Egypt. The minister affirmed the state's commitment to providing an attractive investment environment and expediting procedures to ensure the project's implementation according to the targeted timelines.
Technology Transfer and Job Creation
The minister explained that the project represents genuine added value through transferring modern technology, strengthening partnerships with local manufacturers, raising production line efficiency, and creating new job opportunities, in line with the state's vision to transform Egypt into a regional manufacturing and export hub. The ministry continues working to attract projects that offer innovative solutions to economic challenges and contribute to raising the competitiveness of the Egyptian economy, achieving sustainable growth based on production.
