Egypt's Ministry of Industry announced the completion of official procedures allowing vehicles manufactured in the United States to enter the Egyptian market. The announcement was made during a ceremony held at the Chevrolet plant operated by General Motors Egypt, attended by Engineer Khaled Hashem, Minister of Industry, and Dr. Mohamed Farid, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade. Senior American officials including Mr. Robert Silverman, Chargé d'Affaires of the US Embassy in Cairo, and Mr. Steven Heinz, Assistant US Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Analysis, were also present.

Strategic Milestone in US-Egypt Relations

During the ceremony, Engineer Khaled Hashem emphasized that this milestone reflects the strength and depth of the strategic bilateral relations between Egypt and the United States. He noted that the development demonstrates Egypt's commitment to global market openness and the promotion of free trade and transparency. The Minister expressed his appreciation for the collaborative efforts from both sides, adding that this achievement represents a tangible outcome of Egypt's comprehensive economic reform program, which has successfully created an attractive investment climate.

Egypt's Growing Role as a Regional Manufacturing Hub

Minister Hashem highlighted that this announcement comes as Egypt continues to attract substantial investments across various industrial sectors. The country leverages its strategic geographic location, providing access to one of the largest consumer markets in the Middle East and Africa, along with a broad network of trade agreements, a skilled workforce, and its growing status as a competitive regional manufacturing center. He further explained that the Ministry of Industry has recently identified seven priority industrial sectors, with the automotive industry positioned at the forefront. The national strategy places significant emphasis on developing feeder industries, particularly those supporting the automotive sector, to strengthen the industrial base, increase local added value, empower small and medium enterprises, and enhance their integration into global supply chains.

A Partnership Spanning More Than Four Decades

Engineer Khaled Hashem expressed the Ministry's pride in its partnership with General Motors, which extends over 40 years. He praised the GM Egypt plant as the largest automotive manufacturing facility in the country and the company's only plant in Africa and the Middle East. The Minister commended the company's continuous success and production output, which contributes to supporting the national economy. He stated that completing the procedures for US-made cars to enter the Egyptian market represents a qualitative leap that opens new horizons for cooperation between Egypt and the United States in the automotive sector.
