Egypt and China Agree to Transform Suez Canal into Regional Hub for Auto Manufacturing
The General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), headquartered in the New Administrative Capital, welcomed a high-level Chinese delegation from Nanjing City in Jiangsu Province to explore investment cooperation and industrial expansion opportunities, with a particular focus on the automotive industry, its components, and new energy production supplies. This visit comes as part of the follow-up activities of the "China (Nanjing) – Egypt (Cairo) Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum," hosted in Cairo on June 22, 2026.
Delegation Details and Strategic Objectives
The Chinese delegation was led by Zhou Hongbo, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party in Jiangsu Province and Secretary of the Party Committee of Nanjing City, accompanied by Zhao Liuqing, Minister Plenipotentiary of the Chinese Embassy in Egypt, along with several senior officials and representatives of economic, commercial, and industrial entities, as well as Chinese companies operating in the industrial, logistics, and international trade sectors. The delegation was received by Captain Ahmed Gamal, Vice President of the Authority for the Southern Region, and several SCZone leaders.
Automotive Sector at the Forefront of Cooperation
During the meeting, both sides discussed opportunities to enhance industrial and investment cooperation between the Suez Canal Economic Zone and Nanjing City, focusing on automotive-related industries and their components, in addition to medical industries and new and renewable energy production supplies. The Authority emphasized that the automotive sector represents one of the most promising fields for attracting further Chinese investments in the coming period, driven by the growing interest of Chinese companies in expanding their industrial presence within the SCZone, whether through ongoing projects or new investment plans under study.
Competitive Advantages of the Economic Zone
The Authority highlighted the competitive advantages offered by the Suez Canal Economic Zone to investors, most notably the integration of ports with industrial zones, advanced infrastructure, and the one-stop-shop system that accelerates procedures and facilitates project implementation. These factors position the zone as an attractive destination for major industrial investments, particularly in the automotive sector, which requires advanced infrastructure and integrated supply chains.
Growing Chinese Investments Reflect Confidence
The meeting witnessed mutual praise for the continuous growth of Chinese investments within the Suez Canal Economic Zone, which has become one of the key drivers of industrial and investment activity, reflecting the growing confidence of the Chinese business community in the Egyptian market and the growth opportunities the zone offers. Both sides agreed on the importance of continued coordination in the upcoming phase to strengthen industrial partnerships and attract more investments, especially in the automotive and new energy sectors.
