Bugatti Tourbillon Enters Testing Phase with 1,800 HP and New V16 Powertrain After Chiron Era
The Bugatti Tourbillon has officially entered real-world testing on public roads and in extreme environments, marking a crucial step ahead of its planned customer deliveries in 2026. This phase signals the beginning of a new chapter for the French hypercar manufacturer, following the end of the iconic W16 era that defined the Veyron and Chiron generations for years. The new model introduces a completely reimagined approach to performance engineering that blends mechanical purity with advanced electrification.
Severe winter testing in extreme conditions
Bugatti conducted intensive winter testing for the Tourbillon in Arjeplog, Sweden, one of the harshest environments used for automotive development due to its freezing temperatures and icy road surfaces. The focus of these tests was to evaluate the car’s behavior under low-traction conditions, including all-wheel-drive calibration, torque distribution, traction control systems, electronic stability management, and braking performance on slippery surfaces.
The company emphasizes that these tests are not only about confirming the vehicle’s ability to operate in cold climates, but also about ensuring that its massive 1,800 horsepower output remains fully controllable. Engineers aim to guarantee that the car responds precisely to driver inputs even on extremely low-grip surfaces, a key challenge in the hypercar segment where power levels are exceptionally high.
A radical shift in the powertrain philosophy
One of the most significant changes in the Tourbillon is the replacement of the quad-turbo W16 engine that powered Bugatti models since the Veyron and Chiron. In its place, the new hypercar features an all-new 8.3-liter naturally aspirated V16 engine. This engine alone delivers up to 1,000 horsepower at 9,000 rpm, giving the car a completely different character centered on direct throttle response and mechanical sound rather than turbocharged delivery.
This new combustion setup is complemented by a powerful electric system that adds 800 horsepower, bringing the total output to 1,800 horsepower. The combination delivers instant torque and sharp acceleration, reflecting Bugatti’s strategy of merging traditional high-displacement engineering with modern hybrid technology to redefine its performance identity.
Hybrid system with three electric motors and extreme performance
The Bugatti Tourbillon’s hybrid architecture combines the V16 engine with three electric motors working in perfect synchronization to deliver extreme performance across all driving conditions. This setup allows the vehicle to operate smoothly at low speeds using electric power alone, while unleashing its full potential under hard acceleration.
According to Bugatti, this dual-character approach gives the Tourbillon a unique personality: refined and relatively quiet in everyday driving, yet capable of transforming into one of the most powerful production cars ever built when full power is requested. The hypercar is expected to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in roughly one second, reinforcing its position at the pinnacle of automotive performance.
