Sentiment in Germany's automotive sector improved markedly in July. The business climate index for the industry, published by the Ifo Institute in Munich, rose by 6 points, yet remained in negative territory at -15.6 points. The figure is still far from a full positive turnaround, but it signals a clear corrective move in one of Europe's most important industries.

Cautious Optimism in Expectations

The rise was driven by a notable improvement in business expectations. That jumped to -0.1 points, the highest level in over three years. Just three months ago, the index was more than 30 points lower, reflecting accelerating optimism within the sector. This significant improvement in expectations sends a positive signal for the coming period, even though the current business situation assessment remains deeply negative at -29.9 points.

Order Books Rebound

Anita Wölfl, an expert at the Ifo Institute, said order books are starting to fill up again to some extent, with export expectations also rising. New order data, available through May, also shows a positive trend from the domestic market and the eurozone. These early indicators could translate into a gradual recovery in production over the coming months, especially as supply chains stabilize.

Defense Sector Opens New Avenues

The institute noted that manufacturers of vehicle bodies and equipment are benefiting, among other things, from producing equipment and components that can be used outside the automotive industry, particularly in the defense sector. Wölfl explained that increasing investments in defense equipment across Europe could benefit parts of the automotive industry. This diversification of revenue streams gives the sector additional flexibility in facing structural challenges, such as the shift toward electrification and stricter environmental standards.
