Egypt Offers New Billet Licenses to Boost Local Auto Components
Egypt's industry and investment ministers met with major steel producers including Ezz Steel, Beshay, and El-Masreyin to address billet availability challenges. The government announced new billet production licenses with price and payment facilitations to encourage melting and manufacturing expansion. The move aims to raise domestic supply and cut import reliance, which would support the feeder industry and auto component localization in Egypt over the medium term.
Egypt's Ministry of Industry has offered new licenses for billet production in a bid to increase local supply of steel feedstock and cut reliance on imports. Two separate meetings brought together the Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem and the Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Mohamed Farid with representatives of integrated, semi-integrated, and rolling mills to address production challenges and the availability of billet in required quantities and specifications. The sector is moving.
Ezz Steel, Beshay, and El-Masreyin Lead the Talks
The meetings included representatives from major steel companies, among them Ezz Steel, Suez Steel, El-Masreyin Steel, Beshay Steel, El-Marakby, El-Ashry Steel, and Al-Garhy Group. Discussions focused on strengthening integration across production stages from melting through rolling and final manufacturing, as mills grapple with fluctuating feedstock availability and rising production costs in recent periods.
New Licenses with Payment Facilitation
Steel remains one of the strategic sectors under the ministry's 2030 plan. The industry minister said the new billet licenses come with price and payment facilitations designed to encourage mills to expand melting and manufacturing capacity, raise added value, and reduce import dependence. He stressed the need to accelerate the operation of projects that have already secured new licenses to ensure steady production and a larger domestic supply of feedstock.
Price Monitoring and Complaint Reviews
The investment minister confirmed continued monitoring of the billet market to verify availability at competitive prices. He emphasized reviewing company complaints based on actual data and field visits. Obliging companies to supply the feedstock needed to operate mills according to licensed capacities. The measures aim to tighten market oversight and prevent supply chain disruptions.
Why It Matters for Egypt's Auto Industry
A stable steel market and higher local output can directly support the automotive feeder industry. Expanding the base of local suppliers and reducing reliance on imported components in certain applications sits at the heart of Egypt's auto localization plan, as vehicle assembly plants depend heavily on metal parts made from steel feedstock. Better availability of billet at competitive prices could ease input costs for component suppliers — a factor that may feed through to lower prices for some locally produced spare parts over the medium term.
The government move won't solve every problem in the auto sector overnight. But it addresses a foundational link in the supply chain that has constrained the competitiveness of local manufacturers. Localizing auto components requires raw materials available consistently and at predictable prices — exactly what the two ministries are targeting.
