Egypt's imports of automotive production components, including bodies, chassis, frames, and vehicle accessories, recorded approximately $62.941 million during March, according to a report published by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics. These figures come amid a broader uptick in import activity tied to the automotive sector, which is experiencing rapid developments in local manufacturing and assembly.

Breakdown of Vehicle Imports in March

The value of Egypt's passenger car imports reached around $277.621 million during the same period, while commercial vehicle imports were estimated at $38.475 million. The cost of importing public transport vehicles stood at approximately $6.605 million in March. This data highlights a diversified import structure, with passenger cars continuing to claim the largest share of the total import bill.

Manufacturers Shift Toward Local Production

Helmy Raafat, sales manager at Auto Majed, noted that the recent period has seen an increase in company demand for vehicle imports, coinciding with the launch of new models and the entry of brands into the Egyptian market for the first time. Raafat confirmed that automakers have also boosted their imports of production component shipments to enhance their manufacturing capacities and roll out larger volumes of locally assembled vehicles, which has driven up overall sector imports.

Sales Growth and Changing Import Strategies

Raafat pointed out that car market sales are experiencing a growth rate between 20 and 30%, which is likely to push the sector's import bill higher, especially for production component shipments, alongside a relative decline in fully built-up vehicle imports. This shift is attributed to the increasing trend among dealers toward local manufacturing, capitalizing on government incentives such as customs reductions and the national vehicle industry program.

Notably, the number of private car registrations in Egypt rose by 39% in the first half of this year, reaching 131,501 vehicles, compared to 94,461 vehicles during the same period last year, based on a report from the Egyptian Compulsory Insurance Pool.
