The numbers tell the story. Egypt's auto market council released detailed passenger car sales data for the first five months of 2026, comparing it to the same period last year. The results show sharp divergence by origin country — Chinese, Japanese. European brands surged while Korean models stumbled.

Overall Market Jumps 37%

Total passenger car sales hit 61,895 units between January and May 2026, up from 45,075 units in 2025. That is a 37% gain. The jump signals strong consumer demand returning to Egypt's sedan market despite lingering economic pressures.

Chinese brands led the charge. Sales of Chinese passenger cars reached 26,112 units, compared to 17,021 units last year. The difference is massive. That represents roughly 53% growth, solidifying China's grip on Egypt's entry-level and mid-range sedan segments.

Japanese Dominance, European Stability

Japanese automakers performed equally well. Sales climbed to 16,906 units, a 53% increase over 11,038 units in 2025. Buyers clearly still trust Japanese reliability and resale value, even as newer competitors enter the market.

European cars also gained ground, though at a slower pace. The segment moved 7,807 units compared to 6,346 units last year, a 23% rise. European brands maintain their premium positioning but face mounting pressure from both Japan and China in the volume categories.

Korean Decline Raises Questions

Korean brands tell a different story. Sales dropped over 11% to just 7,003 units, down from 7,891 units in 2025. The slump is notable — Korean manufacturers once dominated several price points in Egypt. Now they find themselves squeezed between aggressive Chinese pricing and established Japanese reputation.
