China Builds 15 Million Cars in Six Months: The Numbers That Anger Washington
The numbers tell the whole story. China produced and sold 15 million cars in the first half of 2026 alone, surpassing the combined output of European and American automakers during the same period. These figures prompted the US Commerce Secretary to level direct accusations of market dumping against Beijing.
Chinese Dominance in Production and Exports
A specialized report revealed that Chery and other Chinese brands strengthened their position as the world's largest producers and sellers, recording 15 million units sold across domestic and international markets in just six months. Exports alone reached 5.1 million vehicles, with June alone seeing nearly one million units shipped overseas.
Projections suggest total Chinese exports could hit 10 million cars by the end of 2026, an unprecedented figure for any automotive industry. This export momentum puts enormous pressure on global giants and keeps the market in a state of constant anticipation.
Why Chinese Cars Dominate
Lower prices lead the charge. Significant advances in design, technology. Equipment levels give Tiggo 8 Pro and other models a clear competitive edge over European, Japanese, and American rivals. BYD Song Plus and other electric vehicles accounted for nearly half of all Chinese car sales, reflecting a major shift toward clean energy.
Electric vehicles played a pivotal role in this dominance, becoming the main growth engine for Chinese exports. Geely Coolray and Changan CS55 Plus are examples of models combining competitive pricing with high-end features.
Direct US Accusations
Howard Lutnick, the US Commerce Secretary, made sharp statements accusing China of pursuing a policy of government-subsidized overcapacity. He said local Chinese governments are racing to establish EV companies and provide significant financial backing, allowing cars to be sold at prices far below their actual production costs.
The American official stressed that this policy represents a form of market dumping. He added that it exerts growing pressure on Peugeot 3008 and other European models struggling to compete with Chinese pricing. Volkswagen Tiguan and Toyota Corolla face similar challenges in multiple markets.
China's expansion is no fleeting phenomenon; it's a long-term strategy backed by full state support. Traditional players face two stark choices: adapt to the new reality or risk losing significant market share.
