The August licensing report confirms a massive dominance of gasoline-powered vehicles in the Egyptian auto market. Official data from the Egyptian Compulsory Vehicle Insurance Pool shows 340,322 gasoline vehicles were registered during the month alone. That number leaves every alternative fuel far behind in the race.

A Closer Look at Diesel and Hybrid Numbers

Diesel vehicles secured the second spot with a total of 115,706 registrations. The gap between diesel and gasoline exceeds 224,000 vehicles, proving that compression-ignition engines still hold a solid presence but can't threaten petrol's leadership. Real-world infrastructure and driver habits clearly favor traditional gasoline.

Vehicles combining gasoline and natural gas reached 13,113 registrations during August. The dual-fuel conversion option remains a choice for a limited segment of car owners despite government efforts to expand refueling stations. Meanwhile, electric vehicles logged only 2,196 units, a figure that highlights Egypt's slow but steady transition compared to global markets.

Natural Gas Hits the Bottom

Vehicles running exclusively on natural gas recorded the lowest numbers across all fuel types in the report, with just 97 units during August. This modest figure reveals that compressed natural gas has not succeeded as a standalone engine option in Egypt, remaining largely tied to dual-fuel systems alongside gasoline.

These numbers arrive alongside a busy licensing period across all segments. Report data points to 397,808 used vehicles registered in August, plus 22,637 customs vehicles. The brand-new car market was equally active, with compulsory insurance policies issued for 67,936 new vehicles licensed during the month — a solid 6.92% increase over July.

Market indicators suggest that fuel-efficient models from Toyota and Hyundai continue to drive demand among Egyptian buyers, while premium electric vehicles remain limited to a niche audience due to high prices and charging infrastructure still in its infancy. The coming months could reshape this fuel landscape, especially with the government's growing focus on boosting local clean-car manufacturing and assembly operations.
