Engine and Performance

The Verna was offered in Egypt with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine featuring electronic fuel injection, producing 106 hp at 5,800 rpm and 145 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm. It came with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission, both paired with front-wheel drive. The 16-valve dual-cam engine returns fuel consumption of around 5.5 liters per 100 km, with a 45-liter fuel tank. The car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in roughly 10.5 seconds and has a top speed exceeding 170 km/h. A Euro 3 catalytic converter helps reduce emissions, and starting with 2009 models, engine sound insulation improved with the addition of an engine-mounting stabilization system. There are no widespread complaints about the engine or transmission, aside from occasional individual gearbox issues that tend to ease with use.

Interior and Cabin Space

The Verna measures 4,260 mm in length, 1,680 mm in width, and 1,405 mm in height, with a 2,440 mm wheelbase. The rear bench is relatively tight on seating space, though the absence of a transmission tunnel improves comfort for a middle-seat passenger. The cabin includes a notably strong air conditioning system, central locking, four speakers, a radio with CD player, interior fuel-flap and trunk release, and a driver armrest. Trunk capacity is 390 liters, and the car weighs 1,120 kg. Interior drawbacks include a significant amount of plastic trim that can produce rattling noises over time, and generally average cabin sound insulation.

Maintenance and Resale

The Verna is regarded as one of the easiest cars to maintain in the Egyptian market thanks to widely available and affordably priced spare parts. Hyundai confirmed continued parts supply even after local production ended in 2019, following more than 14 years of manufacturing and over 217,000 units sold. The car retains reasonably good resale value and is easy to sell given its wide presence on the market, though demand has softened somewhat since production stopped. On the downside, the Verna lacks most modern safety features, its brakes show a noticeable drop in effectiveness above 100 km/h, and it suffers from some relative instability at speed that can be partly addressed by upgrading wheel and tire size.
