Opel CEO: 800V Tech Is Ready in Our New Platforms, But Applying It to Every Car Raises Prices
Opel CEO Florian Huettl stated that the company's new STLA platform can technically support 800-volt charging, but rolling it out across all models would increase costs and prices. He noted that current charging times of 25-27 minutes in some Opel EVs represent an acceptable compromise for a wide range of customers. Huettl emphasized that Opel prefers to direct investments according to actual customer priorities, with the possibility of expanding the technology in the future when economic feasibility allows.
Opel CEO Florian Huettl has confirmed that the company's new STLA platform is technically capable of supporting 800-volt electric charging, but applying this technology to every model would significantly increase vehicle prices. He noted that current charging times for some Opel EVs range between 25 and 27 minutes, which he considers an acceptable compromise for a wide range of users.
Why Won't Opel Roll Out 800V Across Its Entire Lineup?
Cost is the main reason. Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of the 2026 Paris International Motor Show, Huettl explained that developing ultra-fast charging systems requires a more advanced electrical architecture, which drives up the vehicle's final price. He added that achieving charging times under 25 minutes may require higher-cost technologies and electrical structures, a factor that must be evaluated against the target price segment.
Huettl stressed that Opel focuses on delivering electric cars that balance technology and price, especially in segments targeting customers looking for practical and affordable vehicles. He confirmed that the new STLA platform is prepared to support 800-volt technology, giving the company greater flexibility to expand its use in the future when the economic feasibility becomes suitable.
But is Opel abandoning ultra-fast charging entirely? No. Huettl indicated that the company doesn't rule out developing charging capabilities in its upcoming cars, but prefers to direct investments according to actual customer priorities. He explained that increasing charging speed isn't a standalone goal, but must be considered within the total cost, driving range, and usage patterns.
What Does This Mean for EV Buyers in Egypt?
This approach comes as global automakers race to offer ultra-fast charging, yet Opel chooses a more realistic path. It believes a broad segment of users doesn't need charging in under 25 minutes, but rather seeks an affordable electric car with suitable range for daily use. This strategy may slow the spread of 800-volt technology across Opel models, but it keeps their prices competitive in emerging markets.
