Buying an EV Now? Battery Tech Could Make You Regret It
Electric vehicle sales in Egypt are growing gradually, exceeding two thousand units monthly, but the rapid pace of battery technology development is forcing buyers to pause. Hesham El-Zeiny, editor-in-chief of the automotive section at Ahram Gate, warned that hasty purchases could lead to future regret. The Egyptian market hosts a wide range of Chinese electric and hybrid vehicles, intensifying competition and accelerating innovation. The optimal decision depends on studying actual user needs and choosing the car that fits them.
More than two thousand electric vehicles are sold monthly in Egypt. That figure looks modest against the total car market, yet it climbs steadily — and a blunt warning is now emerging: battery technology moves so fast that buying today could become tomorrow's regret. Hesham El-Zeiny, editor-in-chief of the automotive section at Ahram Gate, said those who buy an electric vehicle now may regret it later.
Why Now, Specifically?
The reason is straightforward. EV batteries are advancing rapidly in capacity, charging speed, and cost — meaning any car purchased today could quickly lose its competitive edge. Speaking on the 'Kol El Abaad' programme on Extra News, El-Zeiny noted that monthly EV sales in Egypt exceed two thousand units, but remain limited given the pace of industry change.
China in the Picture
Egypt's market hosts a wide range of Chinese vehicles with dual technologies. Some are hybrids combining petrol engines and electric motors, others are fully electric. BYD and Zeekr are among the most prominent names in this segment, alongside other brands competing hard. The rivalry between these labels and their global counterparts is fierce, pushing faster battery development.
But the real question: should buyers act now or wait?
The Smart Buying Rule
El-Zeiny urges anyone considering an electric car to study their actual needs first. Daily use, driving distance, charging infrastructure, and budget — all must shape the decision. The car that suits someone else may not suit you. Short-city commuters may find electric ideal. Long-distance drivers may prefer a hybrid like the Toyota Corolla or equivalent.
Technology won't stop evolving. Random purchases carry risk. Informed decisions are investments.
