A recent study conducted by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research in collaboration with the International Council on Clean Transportation has revealed a sharp decline in electric vehicle prices in Germany over the past five years, contrary to common consumer perception. The data shows that real prices for electric cars, after accounting for inflation, decreased by 18% between 2020 and 2025, reflecting a major shift in the automotive market.

Research Methodology and Data Analysis

The researchers based their study on an analysis of more than 100,000 individual records from the German Automobile Club (ADAC) database, ensuring accuracy and comprehensiveness. The analysis did not simply compare average prices of all electric vehicles against all internal combustion engine vehicles, as the electric car market has expanded significantly in recent years, especially in higher-priced segments. To avoid unfair comparisons, the researchers adopted a methodology comparing the same or similar vehicles over time.

Key Findings and Inflation Impact

In contrast, prices of internal combustion engine vehicles rose by 2% during the same period, strengthening the cost advantage of electric vehicles in terms of actual cost per kilometer. Peter Mock from the International Council on Clean Transportation confirmed that electric vehicles now offer, on average, longer driving range and better motor performance despite lower real prices compared to previous similar models. These differences became evident after accounting for high inflation in recent years.

Future Outlook for Electric Vehicle Prices

Professor Patrick Plötz from the Fraunhofer Institute believes there is room for further declines in electric vehicle prices, noting that battery price reductions have not yet been fully reflected in final prices. He added that increased production volumes and pressure on manufacturers due to CO2 emission limits are also expected to contribute to this trend. Plötz predicts that if current developments continue, electric vehicle prices in Europe are likely to equal those of comparable internal combustion engine vehicles by 2030, with lower total cost per kilometer.
