Egypt's electric passenger car market experienced a notable slowdown in May 2026, with only 1,600 units sold compared to 1,925 units in April, according to the latest monthly report from the Egyptian Compulsory Insurance Pool. This decline follows March sales of 1,888 units, highlighting fluctuating demand in the country's growing EV segment. The total number of electric vehicles sold and registered in May reached 2,123, including trucks, buses, and vans, with passenger cars making up the majority.

Market Breakdown: Passenger Cars Dominate EV Sales

Out of the 2,123 electric vehicles sold in May, passenger cars accounted for 1,600 units, representing a drop of over 300 vehicles compared to April's 1,925. This decline signals a temporary cooling in the market, though overall EV adoption continues to expand with new brands entering the scene. The data underscores the importance of monitoring monthly trends to understand consumer behavior and the impact of new model launches.

Top 10 Electric Passenger Car Brands in May 2026

BYD retained its lead with 227 units sold, followed by DFSK at 202 units. XPeng ranked third with 96 units, while Volkswagen came fourth with 90 units. Geely secured fifth place with 87 units, including 76 units of the new EX2 model. The remaining top positions were held by Arkvox (83 units), Deepal (78 units), Nissan (76 units), Dongfeng (76 units), Zeekr (69 units), and Rox (63 units).

Comparison with April 2026: Shifting Rankings

April's sales chart showed a different landscape, with BYD leading at 410 units, nearly double its May figure. DFSK followed with 255 units, and XPeng with 134 units. New entrants like Avatr (86 units), IM (80 units), and Li Auto (58 units) made the list, while established names like Mercedes (83 units) and Chevrolet (61 units) also appeared. The comparison reveals a sharp drop for BYD and DFSK in May, while brands like Arkvox, Deepal, and Zeekr gained ground.

The monthly decline in electric passenger car sales may reflect seasonal factors or shifting buyer preferences, but the continued entry of new models and expanding charging infrastructure suggests a resilient long-term outlook for Egypt's EV market.
