Article Summary

BYD expects overseas shipments to exceed 2.5 million vehicles by 2027, according to Deutsche Bank and Citi research notes following a meeting with management. The company targets 1.9 to 2 million exports in 2026, nearly double last year's levels. Its Hungary plant will begin assembly in November or December, helping avoid EU tariffs. BYD also plans 90,000 ultra-fast charging stations by 2028 while aiming for 25% of the Chinese domestic market.

BYD expects its overseas shipments to surpass 2.5 million units by 2027, according to two major brokerage firms that met with company management on Tuesday. The Chinese electric vehicle giant shared its roadmap during investor meetings, with findings published in research notes from Deutsche Bank and Citi.

Export Growth Projections for BYD

Deutsche Bank's note reveals that BYD management targets overseas shipments between 1.9 and 2 million cars in 2026. That figure nearly doubles last year's levels, though it still trails the ambitious 2027 goal. The bank attributes this growth to three key drivers: expanding market share outside China, a growing fleet of dedicated car carriers. An increasing manufacturing footprint in foreign markets.

Shipping constraints limited the company's overseas sales this year. Management admitted that export volumes could have been significantly higher without these logistical bottlenecks, which explains the heavy investment in its own transport fleet.

Hungary Plant and Cost Advantages

The BYD facility in Hungary is expected to begin vehicle assembly in November or December. Local production helps the automaker sidestep European Union tariffs of approximately 27% on battery electric vehicles, while Brazilian import duties stand even higher at 34%.

Citi notes that domestic manufacturing could generate savings exceeding 40,000 yuan — roughly $5,961 per vehicle. Company leadership believes these savings will offset expansion costs and factory startup expenses. The numbers paint a clear picture of why localization has become central to BYD's global strategy.

Massive Charging Network and China Market Share

BYD also plans to build 90,000 ultra-fast charging stations by 2028. The rollout follows a phased approach: 20,000 stations by the end of 2026, 30,000 more during 2027, and the final 40,000 stations in 2028.

The charging network expansion runs parallel to an aggressive domestic strategy. BYD aims to capture 25% of China's local car market, with its share already climbing to 18% in July from roughly 8% at the start of the year. That trajectory shows remarkable momentum in a fiercely competitive landscape.

Reuters attempted to reach BYD management for comment but received no immediate response. Still, the brokerage notes offer a compelling glimpse into the ambitions of the world's fastest-growing automaker, with manufacturing plants, charging infrastructure, and export volumes all scaling up simultaneously.
