This aligns with the state's sustainable development vision and quality-of-life improvements.
The trial operation of Phase 2 of Egypt's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project has begun, spanning 40 kilometers with 15 new stations connecting Ain Sokhna station at the Ring Road-Ain Sokhna intersection to Zewail station at the Ring Road-Dr. Ahmed Zewail axis in October City. This expansion brings the total number of stations across both phases to 31.
Details of Phase 2 BRT Project
Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly inspected the second phase of the project, emphasizing that the state places great importance on public transport projects as a key pillar for sustainable development, improving quality of life, and keeping pace with the major urban expansion in Greater Cairo and new cities. The project marks a qualitative leap in Egypt's transport system.
Supporting Green Public Transport and Reducing Private Car Reliance
The Prime Minister explained that modern public transport projects aren't just about providing advanced mobility, but are part of an integrated vision to reorganize citizen movement within Greater Cairo, link its main axes, and achieve integration between different transport modes. This integration supports urban and economic development plans and meets current and future needs, helping reduce reliance on private cars, improving traffic flow, and preserving the environment.
Environmental and Traffic Benefits of BRT
The BRT project serves as a clear model of integration among modern public transport modes, offering fast, civilized, safe, and clean mobility. It also helps lower carbon emissions and improve air quality, especially with the use of eco-friendly buses. This step aligns with a global shift toward electric vehicles and hybrids, but provides an effective collective alternative.
Future Prospects for Public Transport Projects in Egypt
Phase 2 of BRT is expected to ease pressure on main roads like Cairo and Giza, linking industrial and residential areas. It also enhances integration with taxis and the metro. Citizens can benefit from road improvements to use Hyundai Elantra or Kia Cerato more efficiently. The state plans to expand these projects in the coming years.
With the completion of Phase 2, BRT will become a cornerstone of green transport in Egypt, encouraging sustainable mobility and reducing congestion. This shift reflects the government's commitment to modernizing infrastructure and providing diverse transport options that meet citizens' needs.
