Local Assembly Reduces Car Prices in the Egyptian Market
The Egyptian car market has witnessed significant transformations over the past two years, most notably the expansion of local assembly operations for several models from various global brands. This has directly impacted the prices and availability of certain vehicles, following a prolonged period of supply shortages and record-high prices.
With the state's push to support local industry and increase the local content in the automotive sector, several companies and agents have begun moving assembly operations to Egyptian factories. This has helped reduce some import-related costs and granted certain models greater price competitiveness.
Local Assembly Reduces Import Burdens
According to several car market experts, local assembly has contributed to lowering the final cost of some models by reducing reliance on importing completely built-up units (CBU), which incur higher duties, shipping, and insurance costs compared to components or parts imported for local assembly.
Local manufacturing has also given companies greater flexibility in managing inventory and production according to demand, helping to supply vehicles faster compared to the long waiting periods faced by some fully imported models.
Increased Supply Helps Stabilize Prices
The entry of several locally assembled cars into the market has increased supply volume, a key factor that helped curb the price hikes the sector experienced in recent years.
Several car distributors confirmed that the greater availability of certain locally assembled models has helped reduce the "overprice" phenomenon imposed on many vehicles due to supply shortages and high demand.
Models That Achieved Wide Reach
Recently, a group of locally assembled cars has achieved notable penetration in the Egyptian market, benefiting from their competitive prices compared to some imported alternatives.
Prominent examples include the Nissan Sunny, Hyundai Accent RB, Chery Arrizo 5, and Proton Saga, along with several other models that have entered local production lines.
