Many drivers of cars and motorcycles may view heavy smoke coming from the exhaust system as nothing more than a mechanical issue that requires repair. However, under traffic law, such emissions are considered a traffic violation that may result in significant financial and administrative penalties. The applicable punishment includes a fine ranging from EGP 5,000 to EGP 15,000, with the possibility of a one-year driving license suspension if the violation is repeatedly committed, as part of efforts to protect the environment and improve road safety.

Penalties Under Article 72 Bis 2

Article 72 Bis 2 of the Traffic Law states that, without prejudice to any stricter penalty provided under any other law, a fine of no less than EGP 5,000 and no more than EGP 15,000 shall be imposed on any driver who pollutes the road by throwing waste, construction debris, or any other objects. The same penalty also applies to anyone operating a vehicle that produces excessive noise, emits heavy smoke, has exhaust emissions that do not comply with environmental requirements, gives off unpleasant odors, allows materials to scatter from its load, leaks flammable substances or materials harmful to public health, affects the road's suitability for traffic, drops cargo that endangers road safety or road users, or fails to securely fasten, stabilize, or cover the vehicle's load.

Higher Penalties for Repeat Violations

The law does not stop at financial penalties. The same article provides that the fine is doubled if the violation is repeated within six months. If the offense is committed for a third time within one year, the driver's license is suspended for one full year. These measures are intended to address practices that threaten the environment and the safety of road users.

Enhanced Traffic Enforcement

The General Traffic Department continues to intensify enforcement campaigns across roads and major highways by using fixed and mobile smart radar systems along with modern monitoring technologies capable of detecting violations as soon as they occur. These efforts are supported by the field deployment of traffic officers to identify offending vehicles and reduce violations that pose risks to public safety and the smooth flow of traffic.
