Egypt Signs Agreement with Chinese Firm to Localize Automotive Factory Technology
Egypt's Prime Minister witnessed the signing of an MoU launching a new industrial project with Chinese company Jiangsu Tian Chu to establish a base for planning and constructing car factories. The project covers manufacturing smart production equipment and transferring advanced technology. Officials say the project aims to boost local manufacturing and increase the local component ratio. The strategy is part of attracting global companies with advanced supply chains to support the Egyptian economy.
Egypt's Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly witnessed the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today at the government headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, marking the launch of a new industrial and engineering project to support the country's automotive sector by establishing a specialised base for planning and constructing car factories and various transportation means. This initiative represents a cornerstone in the government's broader industrial strategy.
The MoU was signed between the Ministry of Industry, the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (under the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade), and the Chinese company Jiangsu Tian Chu Intelligent Equipment, in cooperation with FIDIA Automotive Engineering Systems S.R.L. Signatories included Dr. Mohamed Farid, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, Engineer Khalid Hashim, Minister of Industry, and Ms. Ailin Chu, President of Jiangsu Tian Chu.
Strategic Localization Project for Automotive Manufacturing
The project's scope is ambitious. It aims to create a specialised industrial and engineering platform focused on automotive factory engineering, manufacturing and assembling smart production equipment, providing technical services, and transferring and localising technology, alongside training and project execution within Egypt and regional markets. The initiative aligns with the state's policy of deepening local manufacturing and boosting the local component ratio in the automotive and feeder industries.
Enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian products in foreign markets remains a fundamental goal here. The venture tackles the chronic challenges facing the local sector, from high import bills to the persistent scarcity of foreign currency reserves. These precise pain points, which have long hampered automotive growth in Egypt, may find a sustainable solution through this technological transfer.
Investment Minister Highlights Global Strategy
Dr. Mohamed Farid, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, confirmed that signing the MoU with the Chinese company fits squarely within the ministry's strategy to attract leading global companies to the Egyptian market, particularly those possessing advanced supply chains capable of delivering genuine value to the domestic economy. The project specifically targets technology localisation and expertise transfer, supporting deeper local manufacturing and easing pressure on dollar resources.
The aspirations clearly extend beyond Egypt's borders. This agreement opens up avenues for enhancing the production and export capacities of Egyptian industry, potentially reshaping the region's automotive manufacturing map over the next several years. These aren't just final assembly lines being planned — the scope of work involves the capability of designing and implementing the intelligent production lines themselves, a quantum leap in industrial sovereignty.
Cairo is signalling serious momentum on the automotive localisation file. The partnership with the Chinese side underscores a genuine desire for technology transfer rather than just importing finished vehicles. The implementation phase ahead will reveal the exact milestones — yet even the signing itself indicates a decisive strategic shift in Egypt's industrial outlook.
