Egypt Aims to Become Regional Automotive Hub Targeting 1.5 Billion Consumers, Industry Minister Says
Eng. Khaled Hashem, Egypt's Minister of Industry, revealed that the updated Industrial Strategy 2030 aims to transform the country into a regional automotive hub reaching 1.5 billion consumers. The strategy focuses on developing feeder industries, expanding the local supplier base, and reducing imports. It also includes African industrial integration and expansion into South American and Australian markets to boost vehicle and component exports.
1.5 billion consumers. That is the market size Egypt's updated Industrial Strategy 2030 is targeting, according to Eng. Khaled Hashem, Minister of Industry, speaking at the fifth Manufacturing Conference organized by the World Bank Group in Cairo. The minister put the number on the table — and the private sector is leading execution.
What does Egypt's automotive industry strategy through 2030 include?
The strategy focuses on boosting local manufacturing, increasing exports, and reducing dependence on imports. Developing feeder industries is happening through expanding the local supplier base and enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian products, steps that open new horizons for the automotive sector and its components. The goal is clear.
Five main industrial groups form the backbone: industries integrated into global supply chains, strategic and complementary industries, and circular economy industries. The minister stressed that the state is improving the business environment, streamlining procedures. Advancing digital transformation, while the private sector leads industrial development efforts. The equation has flipped.
Feeder industries as the gateway to deeper local manufacturing
Deepening resource-based industries is a core pillar. Developing feeder industries helps cut imports and raise added value, including refractories, alloys, and castings that form part of the industrial base supporting production sectors. These components are the backbone of any vehicle built locally.
The opportunities for Egypt's car sector are multiple: localizing component production, developing local suppliers, attracting new investment, and adopting modern technology to raise production efficiency and improve product quality. Each item addresses a real challenge local manufacturers have faced for years.
African integration opens new markets for vehicle exports
The African Industrial Integration Initiative aims to build shared value chains, boost industrial investment, and increase intra-African trade. African markets represent a promising opportunity for Egyptian-made vehicles and components, as the state pushes industrial integration and expansion into foreign markets. Australia and South America are also on the map.
The updated strategy isn't content with the domestic market. The minister indicated expansion includes markets outside the continent, giving local manufacturers of Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, and other local players a real export opportunity. Is that enough to attract major investment?
The most critical file remains feeder industries. Without local suppliers capable of delivering world-class components at competitive prices, export ambitions stay limited. The minister laid out the points — execution is the real test.
