Egypt's Minister of Industry, Khaled Hashem, has firmly denied recent rumors that the government is imposing restrictions on car imports, clarifying that the state is not discriminating between dealerships and companies regarding import quotas. Instead, he emphasized that the government is implementing a comprehensive regulatory process aimed at achieving fair competition and protecting the rights of both consumers and business owners.

Regulation, Not Restriction

The minister stressed that Egypt's automotive sector should not be viewed merely as an import activity but as an integrated system encompassing production and local manufacturing. He revealed that the government is currently studying a set of new measures to enhance market efficiency, including requiring sufficient financial solvency for importers, establishing accredited maintenance centers, and ensuring the availability of genuine spare parts to guarantee comprehensive services for customers.

Quality Control and Eliminating Incomplete Services

Hashem added that these measures aim to regulate the car market and prevent entities that provide incomplete services from operating. Strict monitoring of spare parts quality and maintenance services will be enforced, along with a ban on using unapproved products that could harm consumers or affect vehicle safety, thereby strengthening trust in the local market.

National Program to Develop Local Suppliers

The minister also announced a new program designed to boost the efficiency of local automotive component suppliers, with the goal of reducing reliance on imported parts and promoting domestic manufacturing to increase added value in Egypt's automotive industry. This initiative is expected to positively impact the sector's export capacity and improve the trade balance.

Impact on the Market and Consumers

These statements come at a time when the Egyptian car market is experiencing cautious anticipation, especially amid challenges facing importers and dealerships due to exchange rate fluctuations and rising costs. The government asserts that these regulatory measures will contribute to market stability and create a more transparent competitive environment, ultimately benefiting consumers seeking competitively priced vehicles with reliable after-sales services.
