EGP 150,000 Incentive: New Details on Egypt's 2027 EV Replacement Initiative
Egypt's government is studying a 2027 initiative to replace fuel-powered cars with electric vehicles under the name "Supporting the Spread of Electric Vehicles." Owners won't be forced to scrap their old cars — they can either hand them over for scrap value or sell them directly. Manufacturers could receive incentives up to 30% of the EV's value, capped at EGP 150,000, with a 45% local component requirement.
Egypt's government is studying the launch of its first dedicated initiative to replace conventional fuel vehicles with electric ones by 2027, under the name "Supporting the Spread of Electric Vehicles." The program aligns with the state's push toward clean mobility and deeper local manufacturing. According to four sources, including government officials, the initiative targets boosting domestic EV production while protecting local products against imported competition.
Will You Have to Hand In Your Old Car?
One government official revealed that the upcoming initiative won't force citizens to surrender their fuel-powered cars when switching to an EV. The current proposal includes two mechanisms for old car owners: the first is handing over the car in exchange for a scrap value. The second proposed mechanism allows the owner to sell the car directly and use the proceeds toward the down payment on a new electric vehicle from participating companies. The government has yet to finalize the target percentage of cars to be scrapped under the program.
Incentive Up to EGP 150,000
Current proposals include a cash incentive for manufacturers based on their sales volume, with the incentive value tied to increasing the share of local components and achieving high production levels. According to a government official, the incentive could reach 30% of the EV's value, capped at EGP 150,000 per vehicle. The ministries of industry and finance are currently studying implementation mechanisms, alongside qualifying participating companies and their local manufacturing expansion plans. The current proposals require that locally assembled cars contain no less than 45% local components.
Competitive Pricing and After-Sales Services
The initiative is expected to include a set of controls aimed at making electric vehicles more attractive to Egyptian consumers. Participating companies will need to offer competitive pricing and robust after-sales services to ensure the program's success. The move comes amid growing interest in electric and hybrid vehicles in the Egyptian market, driven by rising fuel costs. This initiative could reshape demand dynamics in the local auto market over the coming years.
