Digital Media Professor Warns Against Product Defamation on Social Media and Calls for Continuous Monitoring of Blogger Content
Dr. Saeed Hamid, a professor of digital media at several Arab universities, has highlighted the growing phenomenon of defamation, product disparagement, and intellectual property violations on social media platforms. He noted that some content creators are overstepping professional boundaries, causing harm to individuals, institutions, and the public interest.
The Spread of Misinformation and Its Economic Impact
During his interview with the “Arabity” program on Egypt Radio, hosted by journalist Hisham Al-Zeini, Dr. Hamid explained that publishing false news, misleading information, or content that damages products without evidence has become one of the most dangerous practices requiring decisive legal and regulatory action. He added that these practices not only harm corporate reputations but also negatively affect the national economy and consumer confidence in both local and imported products.
Laws Regulating Bloggers and Content Oversight
The digital media professor emphasized that laws regulating bloggers aim to protect the reputation of states, safeguard individual rights, maintain societal privacy, and shield businesses and the economy. He stressed that promotional and advertising content must undergo continuous monitoring to ensure compliance with professional standards and to avoid harming consumers, competitors, or state institutions. He clarified that regulation is not a restriction of freedoms but a necessity to ensure content integrity and protect all parties involved.
Dr. Hamid concluded that content creation now wields influence that may surpass traditional media, placing greater responsibility on everyone addressing the public through digital platforms. He called for raising public awareness on distinguishing objective content from misleading material, stressing that legal accountability for those who cross boundaries has become unavoidable under existing digital regulations.
