Many drivers turn to coffee before driving or during long trips, believing it to be the quickest solution to fight drowsiness and boost concentration. However, traffic safety experts warn against relying on it alone as a means to stay alert behind the wheel. Although caffeine may provide a temporary feeling of energy, it does not address the root cause of fatigue and cannot substitute for adequate sleep or taking a break when feeling tired.

Temporary Alertness Does Not Eliminate Risk

Coffee can stimulate the nervous system for a limited time and may temporarily reduce the sensation of drowsiness, but its effects vary from person to person. Drinking coffee does not mean the driver is capable of continuing safely for hours. After a cup of coffee, a driver might feel somewhat active while the body remains in a state of genuine exhaustion, making sudden loss of focus or drowsiness possible at any moment.

Fatigue Does Not Disappear with Caffeine

The core issue is that coffee can give drivers a false sense of control, leading them to postpone rest stops or continue driving despite clear signs of fatigue such as frequent yawning, heavy eyelids, reduced concentration, or slight drifting from the lane. In this case, the danger lies not in the coffee itself but in relying on it instead of rest, which can increase the likelihood of accidents, especially on highways or during nighttime driving.

When Should You Stop Immediately?

Safety experts advise stopping in a safe place as soon as you feel drowsy or notice declining focus, even if you have already had coffee. A short nap or rest break before continuing the journey is recommended, as a few minutes of sleep can be far more effective than driving while fatigued.

Coffee Is Not a Substitute for Sleep

Coffee should not be viewed as a permit for extended driving without breaks, because the effect of caffeine is time-limited and may be followed by increased fatigue in some individuals once it wears off. Moreover, excessive coffee consumption can cause anxiety, increased heart rate, or distraction for some drivers, potentially affecting driving calmness and decision-making speed.

Tips for Long Trips

It is preferable to get enough sleep before traveling, avoid driving during times when you naturally feel drowsy, and split the journey into short segments with regular rest breaks. Additionally, ventilating the car, drinking water regularly, and stopping immediately at any sign of fatigue are essential. Road safety begins with the driver's awareness of their physical condition and not taking unnecessary risks.
