Why Black Cars Are More Prone to Accidents: A Study Reveals the Reasons
Black cars are widely popular in both Arab and global markets, with many buyers drawn to their elegant and luxurious appearance. However, despite this high demand, traffic studies suggest that owning a black vehicle may come with increased risks on the road, particularly under low-light conditions or unstable weather.
Reduced Visibility and Higher Collision Risk
Research conducted by the Accident Research Center at Monash University in Australia found that light-colored vehicles, such as white and silver, reflect light better, making them more visible to other drivers. In contrast, black paint reduces visual contrast, which can impair other motorists' ability to accurately judge distances and vehicle speeds. This raises the likelihood of collisions, especially during sunrise and sunset when natural light levels are low.
Blending into the Environment and Heat Stress
At night or during rainy and overcast weather, black cars tend to visually blend into the road surface or surrounding background, reducing how quickly they are noticed and giving other drivers less time to react. Additionally, black paint absorbs more sunlight than lighter colors, causing the cabin temperature to rise rapidly. This can lead to heat stress for the driver and affect reaction times, particularly if the air conditioning system is insufficient. Moreover, black vehicles can be harder to spot in side mirrors, especially when driving at night, further increasing the potential for accidents.
