Volkswagen Announces Largest Restructuring in Its History: Job Cuts and Plant Closures
German automotive giant Volkswagen is facing one of the most challenging phases in its history, prompting the company to adopt ambitious austerity plans that include eliminating tens of thousands of jobs and closing several key factories. This move is part of a comprehensive restructuring aimed at enhancing the group's competitiveness in a global automotive market undergoing radical transformations.
Austerity and Reform Plan Details
CEO Oliver Blume confirmed that the board aims to make Volkswagen stronger and more competitive, especially in an increasingly complex global environment. Blume stated that the group is working to reduce risks and create new opportunities by leveraging its own capabilities, while sending a clear message of support for Germany as a leading economic and industrial hub.
Continued Investment in the Future Despite Cuts
Chief Financial Officer Arno Antlitz explained that Volkswagen will continue its massive investments in electric vehicles and modern software development, while also maintaining the competitiveness of its internal combustion engine cars. He emphasized that achieving these goals requires decisive cost reduction, enhanced integration among the group's companies, and reduced administrative complexity, which will sustainably boost profitability.
Massive Numbers and Threatened Plants
Although the supervisory board has not yet issued final decisions following its meeting in Wolfsburg, the group's headquarters, German media reports have revealed staggering figures. Manager Magazin reported that the number of jobs at risk could reach 100,000 worldwide, double the previously discussed figure, while Bild newspaper raised the estimate to around 120,000 jobs. Reports also indicated that four major plants in Germany are at risk of closure: Hanover, Emden, Zwickau, and Neckarsulm, as part of a plan targeting cost reduction and operational efficiency improvement.
