One Bolt Triggers Global Recall of 2.8 Million Volkswagen, Audi, and SEAT Cars
Volkswagen Group has launched a global recall affecting approximately 2.8 million vehicles from Volkswagen, Audi, and SEAT. The issue involves potential corrosion of a steering system mounting bolt caused by road salt exposure and long-term operation. Affected models include the Tiguan, Touran, Golf Variant, Golf Sportsvan, and Caddy produced between September 2013 and July 2024. The repair takes about one hour, but owners may need two dealer visits due to parts shortages.
Volkswagen Group has announced a massive global recall affecting approximately 2.8 million vehicles across its Volkswagen, Audi, and SEAT brands. The culprit? A single bolt securing the steering system that may corrode over time. The issue isn't as minor as it sounds.
What Exactly Is Happening with the Steering System?
Internal quality checks revealed that prolonged exposure to road salt, combined with years of operation and harsh environmental conditions, could corrode a mounting bolt in the steering system of certain Volkswagen models. This corrosion may compromise the system's safety in some cases — prompting the German automaker to act immediately.
Tiguan, Golf, and Caddy... The Full List of Affected Models
Vehicles covered by the recall include the Tiguan, Touran, Golf Variant, Golf Sportsvan. Caddy, all produced between September 2013 and July 2024. According to Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority, at least 950,000 vehicles in the country are affected. Globally, Volkswagen cites around 2.1 million cars, while approximately 895,000 Volkswagen-brand vehicles are affected in Germany alone.
The Bigger Problem: Two Dealer Visits Required
Owners of affected vehicles may need to visit service centers twice. An internal parts-supply memo indicated that the correct bolt required for the fix may not be available in sufficient quantities when the recall campaign begins. The temporary solution? Using an alternative bolt. But this interim fix doesn't end the recall — owners will have to return once the correct bolt becomes available. These measures allow service centers to repair affected cars and release them to owners even without the original part in stock.
How Long Does the Repair Take?
One hour. That is the estimated time to complete the repair on a single vehicle, according to available information. Yet despite the seemingly small nature of the issue, the sheer scale of the recall puts immense pressure on global service networks. Audi and SEAT are part of the same campaign, meaning millions of owners across Europe, Asia, and the Americas will receive recall notices in the coming period.
What Does This Recall Mean for the Car Market?
In the short term, the used car market for models like the Volkswagen Tiguan and Golf may see some price fluctuation, particularly in European markets. But the company confirmed that repairs will be free of charge for all affected vehicles. The final total number of vehicles covered by the campaign has not yet been confirmed, though a Volkswagen spokesperson provided the initial figures. Monitoring continues.
