Mercedes-Benz Posts Over 1 Billion Euros in Quarterly Profit Despite Global Sales Decline
The numbers tell a clear story. Mercedes-Benz Group reported a sharp rise in second-quarter net profit, defying the trend of falling global sales and proving that cost-cutting measures and operational improvements can offset market headwinds. The German automaker managed to grow where many expected stagnation.
Net Profit Jumps 13.5% in Q2
Mercedes-Benz announced that group net profit for the April-to-June period increased 13.5% year-on-year, reaching approximately 1.09 billion euros. That is a significant leap from the 957 million euros recorded in the same period last year. This marks the first annual growth in second-quarter net profit since 2023.
Revenue Drops but Operating Profit Improves
Group revenue fell 3.3% during the quarter to just over 32 billion euros. Yet operating profit before interest and taxes surged 21.5% to around 1.55 billion euros. The company attributed this to its ongoing efficiency and productivity programs, which have started to pay off.
The performance of light commercial vehicles and financial services helped offset the decline in passenger car sales. Those segments showed resilience, cushioning the blow from weaker consumer demand.
Chinese Market Remains a Key Challenge
China continues to pressure Mercedes-Benz results. Passenger car sales in the market dropped 30% in the second quarter alone. Total sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles fell to around 512,000 units, a 6% decline compared to the same period last year. The company's biggest market is proving to be its biggest headache.
First-Half Results and Austerity Measures
For the first half of the year, group net profit fell 6.3% to approximately 2.52 billion euros. Revenue declined 4.1%, while operating profit before interest and taxes slipped 3.1% year-on-year. Mercedes-Benz continues its austerity drive, following a sharper profit drop in 2025, as it navigates a challenging global automotive landscape.
