General Motors Egypt has secured a series of prestigious awards at the 16th edition of the Egypt Car of the Year Awards 2026, along with a special recognition for the company's 100-year presence in Egypt and the Middle East. Simultaneously, the company unveiled plans to introduce two new models that will be locally assembled in the Egyptian market, reinforcing its commitment to local manufacturing and supporting the national automotive industry.

Chevrolet Dominates the Egyptian Market

The Chevrolet brand strengthened its position in the local market by winning three major awards, including the title of the best-selling brand in the passenger car and commercial truck segments, as well as leading commercial truck sales. The Chevrolet Optra also retained the award for the best locally manufactured economy passenger car for the second consecutive year, reflecting sustained customer trust in this practical and reliable vehicle.

Special Recognition for a Century of Presence

The ceremony honored General Motors Egypt for completing a full century of operations in Egypt and the Middle East, a rare achievement that underscores the deep-rooted relationship between the company and the Egyptian market. Additionally, Sharon Nishi, Chairman and Managing Director of General Motors Egypt and Africa, was recognized for her pivotal role in leading the company and enhancing its competitive position in the automotive sector, as well as driving local manufacturing forward.

Two New Locally Assembled Models Announced

During her speech, Sharon Nishi announced the company's intention to launch two new models that will be locally assembled, as part of the company's strategy to expand local manufacturing and support the national industry. She explained that one of the two models will be a compact crossover SUV bearing the Chevrolet badge, indicating the company's direction toward meeting the growing demand for sport utility vehicles in the Egyptian market.

A Rich History and Massive Local Production

Nishi emphasized that this recognition reflects the trust Egyptian customers have placed in the Chevrolet brand, which spans over 100 years of presence in the Egyptian market. She noted that the company began its operations in Alexandria in 1926, then started local production of Chevrolet trucks in 1937. She added that the General Motors plant in the 6th of October City has produced over one million vehicles, supporting the local supplier ecosystem and creating direct and indirect job opportunities.

Continued Investment in Manufacturing and Exports

Nishi stated that the company aims to expand its portfolio of locally manufactured models in the coming period, to foster sustainable growth and meet the evolving needs of the Egyptian market. She confirmed the company's continued investment in local manufacturing, development of Egyptian talent, and strengthening Egypt's position as a regional hub for automotive manufacturing and export. Meanwhile, Engineer Medhat El-Shennawy, Director of Marketing, Sales, and After-Sales Services at General Motors Egypt and Africa, said that Chevrolet's leading position in the Egyptian market reflects years of trust and reliability, noting that the company's products, from pickup trucks to passenger cars, continue to meet the needs of customers and businesses across various sectors.
