The move is part of broader government efforts to diversify consumer options and boost competition in the automotive sector, with a strong emphasis on global safety and quality standards.
Plant Tour and Decades-Long Partnership
The minister toured the production lines and reviewed the company's expansion plans for the Egyptian market, joined by Engineer Khalid Hashim, Minister of Industry; Steven Heinz, US Assistant Secretary of Commerce; Robert Silverman, Chargé d'Affaires at the US Embassy in Cairo; and Rohan Fernandez, President and Managing Director of General Motors Egypt and Africa. Dr. Saleh emphasized that the partnership between Egypt and General Motors spans over four decades, making it one of the oldest economic ties between the two nations, reflecting mutual confidence in the Egyptian economy and its ability to attract long-term investments.
Boosting Investment and Local Manufacturing
The minister stated that the state is committed to creating a competitive investment environment that enables global companies to expand and increase their investments. He noted that the event highlights the competitive advantages of the Egyptian economy in attracting major industrial investments. The government is working on an integrated system to deepen local manufacturing and increase the local content ratio in the automotive industry, through coordination between the Ministry of Investment, the Ministry of Industry, and other relevant bodies, to ensure alignment of investment, industrial, and financing policies toward achieving national targets for production growth and competitiveness.
Dr. Saleh added that Egypt possesses key assets qualifying it to become a regional hub for the automotive industry, including its strategic location, advanced infrastructure, and a network of free trade agreements providing access to broad regional and international markets.
