Egypt's Industry Minister: Retrofitting Existing Car Plants and Attracting Global Foundry Investment
Regular meetings are now the norm. Egypt's Ministry of Industry announced today that it will hold continuous sessions with the Presidential Advisory Council for Egyptian Scientists and Experts, alongside car manufacturers, to establish a clear executive framework for the joint study's recommendations. A specialized committee has been formed, bringing together ministry representatives, council members, and industry players to turn these recommendations into actionable steps on the ground.
A Comprehensive Strategy for the Auto Industry
Attracting global foundry companies tops the priority list. The minister emphasized the strong interest in pumping new investments into this vital sector, describing it as a cornerstone for deepening local manufacturing in heavy and engineering industries, led by the automotive sector. Transferring and localizing the latest technologies in foundry work represents a pivotal move toward building a robust industrial base.
The bet on integrated manufacturing is clear. The ministry aims to move beyond mere assembly into a fully integrated car industry covering the entire value chain, according to the minister's statements stressing that assembly is just the first step in an ambitious journey. Egypt is steadily progressing toward becoming a car-manufacturing nation, with gradual expansion in local component production, manufacturing deepening, technology localization. Building an industrial base capable of meeting domestic demand and venturing into export markets.
Retrofitting Existing Assembly Plants
Existing factories are receiving special attention at this stage. The retrofitting plan includes establishing integrated production facilities. That will help reduce the import bill for critical components. Enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian products in regional and international markets remains the ultimate goal, running in parallel with the implementation of the National Program for Automotive Industry Development (AIDP).
The private sector is a key partner in this vision. Building an industrial base capable of satisfying local market needs and launching into export markets requires concerted efforts from all stakeholders, while opening the door for global car companies to contribute to this ecosystem. The coming days will reveal more executive details about these ambitious directions.
