Afreximbank Allocates $1 Billion from El Alamein to Deepen Africa's Auto Industry
Afreximbank announced a $1 billion fund dedicated to Africa's automotive industry at the African Automotive Investment Forum in El Alamein. The bank has disbursed $233 million so far and identified 10 investment opportunities worth $125 million in component manufacturing. The fund aims to localize auto production and strengthen regional supply chains under the AfCFTA.
The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has unveiled a $1 billion fund dedicated to Africa's automotive industry at the African Automotive Investment Forum in El Alamein. The figure is massive. The fund aims to deepen local manufacturing and strengthen regional value chains under the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement, with participation from officials, automakers, suppliers, investors, and financial institutions. The move comes as African nations push to reduce reliance on imported new cars and components.
Fund Details and Disbursements
Afreximbank has disbursed $233 million from the fund so far. Financing tools include project preparation, guarantees. Equity participation — instruments that component factories supplying brands like Chery badly need. The bank identified at least 10 bankable investment opportunities worth roughly $125 million in automotive component manufacturing. These cover brake systems, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, tires, batteries, and battery housings.
Forum Theme and Legislative Goals
The forum ran under the theme 'Unlocking Africa's Automotive Potential under the AfCFTA.' Attendees discussed legislative reforms, investment-friendly policies, financing mechanisms, technology transfer, and localization of component manufacturing. The goal is clear. Joint ventures and regional supply agreements would boost industrial competitiveness and create specialized jobs, which directly impacts Chery prices in the Egyptian market over the long run.
Government-Industry Collaboration Needed
Dr. Jeanmour Zanamoui, the bank's director of trade facilitation and investment promotion, said developing Africa's auto industry requires stronger cooperation between governments, manufacturers, and financial institutions. He added that converting investment opportunities into sustainable projects supports local production and regional supply chains. The statement carries weight. Without coordination between customs and financing policies, these opportunities will stay on paper, especially amid fierce competition from Chery and other Chinese brands dominating Egypt's used car and new car market.
What It Means for Egypt's Auto Market
Egypt is one of the continent's largest automotive markets. Any regional funding for component localization will affect local production costs. The forum brought together suppliers and financial institutions. This means local assembly plants could benefit from joint financing to manufacture batteries and brakes instead of importing them outright. Deeper supply chains will also accelerate local production of the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro. That could reflect on final consumer prices.
